Prof. G. U. Thite, retired professor and Head, Department of Sanskrit and Prakrit Languages, university of Pune, is presently the Curator at Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute, Pune. His publications: Sacrifice in the Brahmana texts, Pune, 1975, Carvakasamiksa (ed) Pune, 1978; Yajna asaya ani aviskara (ed.) Pune, 1979; Medicine: its magicoreligious aspects according to Vedic and later Literature, Pune, 1981; Music in the Veda: its magicoreligious significances, Delhi, 1996; Yajna: Kal, Aj, ani Udya, Pune, 2000; Apastamba-Srauta-sutra (translation with notes), Delhi, 2005; several papers in national and international journals; knowledge of French and German. Some of his thought-provoking theses are as follows: 1) In India there is both Veda-pramanya and Pramanavedatva. 2) Vratya was an ur-monk. The Vratya-Stoma sacrifices were to be performed in order to become a Vratya and not to be free from Vratyahood. 3) There is no word for "nation" in Sanskrit.
